He wove a personal, distinctive, extraordinary plan into each of our lives and He made it good. He gave us a variety of gifts and put us all in specific places. Our Father, our talented Creator, formed all of us with certain shapes and sizes, painted us with different colors and patterns. They are different and unique, but neither of them are more loved, more blessed, or more special to God. The good news is, that one of these options isn’t better than the other. On a normal day, do you feel like the simple dinner plate or the beautiful vase? My guess is that your answer is a lot like mine and like my husband’s: the simple dinner plate. “When a potter makes his pottery, he puts just as much care and love into making a beautiful vase as he does a simple dinner plate.” He said something to me that sunk into my heart so deeply I knew I had to share it. The other day, my husband Micah and I were talking about how God is the potter and how we are the clay. That’s when questions of doubt and self-worth seep into my mind, making me forget the way I was formed, and most importantly, the One who so delicately formed me.

I see others who are doing things I wish I could be doing, knowing people I wish I could know, accomplishing things I wish I could be accomplishing, and going places I wish I could be going. I know for me, there are days when this can be hard to believe. God made all of us, different and unique from one another, but with the same love and care. Not just the pastor of a mega-church or the author who has several published books or the worker that gets high praise and recognition for everything they do. Not just the people who have thousands of followers on Twitter or the people who are famous and in magazines or the people who everyone seems to want to be friends with. We are all the fine work, the masterpieces of His very own hands. Let it soak in, because it is so, incredibly important. Isaiah 64:8 states, “But now, O Lord, you are our Father we are the clay, and you are our potter we are all the work of your hand.” (ESV)īefore you keep going, read that verse again a few times. This makes us wonder, “God, why didn’t you make me that way? How come I didn’t get that kind of life?” We watch as other people’s lives seem to effortlessly fall into place while ours are either staying the same or moving backwards. We see people with jobs that we can’t even imagine having and we hear of others embracing opportunities that we can only dream of. Sometimes it’s really easy to feel like we are less special or less blessed and loved than others.
